Joker Has Some Hidden Details

Joker is one of those films that, even though we saw it coming, still shook the movie world and the world at large by storm. This film from The Hangover director Todd Phillips was a crossover phenomenon. It was the anti-superhero movie about a character that is totally unredeemable. However, that didn’t stop viewers from embracing Joaquin Phoenix‘s turn as Arthur Fleck, the man who would eventually become the Joker. So dense was this movie, so layered was it with themes and ideas about society, mental illness, and how we treat people that are different, that it often doesn’t play like a film in the DC canon...

The Irishman

The Irishman

The Irishman

This article contains major The Irishman spoilers. You can read a spoiler-free review here.

The Irishman closes on a provocative shot. After a lifetime of living in the shadows, Robert De Niro’s Frank Sheeran is desperate for the light outside his door, and the community he hopes it invites in. Yet once his priest walks through it, leaving for holidays that will once again pass unmarked for the man who paints houses, Frank knows there is no one on the other side. Neither of his daughters want anything to do with him, and the world he’s built has forgotten him. It is a loaded moment that encapsulates a lifetime of regret, as well as all the thematic threads coursing through Martin Scorsese’s potentially final crime epic.

What Scorsese’s ending is about is clear: the pun...

Even before folks saw what it was and the end result, there were plenty who had reservations about a remake of The Lion King. Today’s audiences claim they’re soured on re-imagining’s of Disney classics to begin with, and the original animated movie definitely strikes a chord with audiences. It wouldn’t be surprising if any director was less than thrilled to take on the challenge of re-adapting the story, but Jon Favreau was actually excited to make it.

Favreau, who has directed various few projects for Disney, Marvel and, more recently, Star Wars, was thrilled at the opportunity he had with The Lion King...

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood attempts to take back stolen potential via the kind of fantasy fulfillment that’s made only possible on celluloid. As with the Beatles’ song “Helter Skelter,” Sharon Tate, and the peace and love generation as a whole, the icons of hope in the 1960s were all tainted by mere association with Charles Manson. None of these needed to be linked to the murderous narcissist. Tate, magnificently captured Margot Robbie in the film, would have continued the rising trajectory of her film and modeling career; “Helter Skelter” would be remembered as the song that invented heavy metal, when it was just Paul McCartney trying to make as much noise on vinyl as possible; peace and Love would have at least hung on until the Roll...

The Walking Dead: Third Series

The newest Walking Dead spinoff has a working title and plot details have been revealed. The comic book that spawned the The Walking Dead may have come to an end earlier this year, but the TWD television franchise continues on, and indeed is set for another expansion.

First premiering in 2010, the original Walking Dead series went on to become an iconic show and a ratings giant for AMC (though those ratings have fallen off significantly in recent years). Season 10 of the flagship show is set to debut in October, and promises to feature a war against the villainous Whisperers. Meanwhile, the show’s first spinoff series, Fear the Walking Dead also continues on, with season 5 currently underway. In addition to those two shows, The Walking Dead will get a f...

‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

‘80s nostalgia abounds in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, and with the third season now arriving for fans to watch, there’s also a new soundtrack.

While this new season of the series is loosely set around 1985, the soundtrack does include a number of non-‘80s selections, including The Who’s ‘60s classic “Baba O’Riley,” Foreigner’s ‘70’s rocker “Cold as Ice” and pre-rock era tracks from Patsy Cline (“She’s Got You”) and Vera Lynn (“We’ll Meet Again”).

But alas, the key here is building the feeling of the era, and the soundtrack definitely sets you right back in the day with cuts from Howard Jones, Madonna, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Pointer Sisters, REO Speedwagon, Wham!, Weird Al Yankovic, The Cars, Corey Hart, Tee...

Hardcore Twilight Fandom

It’s been slightly over a decade since the Twilight film franchise took off. And the last film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part II, arrived a whopping seven years ago. You’d think that the hype had died down after that last film faded into memory, but as it turns out, there’s a new documentary about just how the Twilight fandom has not only survived, but it’s thrived in the interim.

Titled We Made A Twilight Documentary?!, the special delves into just how the town of Forks, Washington went from a reluctant pop culture landmark into a revitalized community, all thanks to it being featured as the main setting of author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga. And it couldn’t have happened at a better time either.

Apparently, just as the Twilig...

For many, this past weekend marked the final binge of Jessica Jones and the Marvel/Netflix shows. The third season was a marked improvement over the second, picking up speed as it went along and building on Jessica’s growth as a person. All of these morally-murky characters that we’ve come to know and love (or even hate) spent much of their final thirteen episodes meditating on what it means to be a hero, even as they were punching, kicking, clawing, and killing their way through Hell’s Kitchen.

But what if this weren’t the final season? While the details surrounding the cancelations of all of the Marvel Netflix shows remain murky, from what we understand,...

‘Pennyworth’ : Batman’s Butler

Before Alfred was Batman’s loyal manservant he was … well he was still Alfred, but he was, like, way cooler. He did awesome spy stuff! The messes he cleaned up [puts on sunglasses] were international incidents with the fate of the world at stake.

At least that is the premise of the new series Pennyworth, coming to EPIX later this summer. On the show, Alfred (played by Jack Bannon) is still a young man, working for Bruce Wayne’s pops Thomas many years before Bruce’s birth. The show will show how Alfred became Alfred, and presumably why he’s so loyal to the Wayne family (and so oddly adept at sewing battle wounds and fixing Batmobiles).

Interest in Chernobyl has skyrocketed since the airing of the surprise hit HBO miniseries about the infamous nuclear disaster. (Reuters reports a “a 40% rise in [tour] trip bookings since the series.” But not everyone is happy about the increase in attention. The Moscow Times reports that general reaction to the series in Russia has been heavily negative, with some in the media claiming it was designed “to tarnish this country’s image as a nuclear power” and that the show presents “a caricature and not the truth.”

To counteract that “caricature,” one Russian TV station is prepping a response: Its own Chernobyl series with a somewhat different account of what went wrong...
